Kimhasmorethan30years’experienceinmolecularplantpathologyandmoleculargenetics,investigatingfungalandviralpathogensofwheat,barley,tomato,potato,oilseedrapeandarabidopsisSince1998,Kim’sresearchteamhasbeenengagedintheglobalanalysisofnewlysequencedgenomesofplantinfectingfungiThroughthisgrowinginterestinlargedatasets,Kim’steam,incollaborationwithcomputationalbiologistsatRothamstedResearchandtheENSEMBLteam(EBI,Cambridge),haveestablishedthePathogen-HostInteractionsdatabase(PHI-base)andtheinterconnectedPhytoPathdatabase;theiraimistospeedupandrefinetheexplorationofthepathogenicprocessandhostdefenceThewheatpathogenomicsresearchisfocusedonunderstandinghowplantdiseaseresistancemechanismsoperate,howfungalpathogenscausediseaseonwheatcropsandondevelopingnovelapproachestoevaluategenefunctioninwheatandfungalpathogensSpecificprojectsareexploringHostInducedGeneSilencing(HIGS)tocontrolFusariuminfectionsKim’steamhasfurtherdevelopedtwovirusvectorsystemsforthetransientover-expressionofheterologousproteinsincerealplantstorapidlyexploreproteinfunctionTake-allrootdiseaseresearch,ongoingatRothamstedResearchsincethemid-1920s,isalsopartofKim’sresearchportfolio,whichaimstoimproveglobalfoodsecurity
