JamesRAlfanowasbornJune2,1963,inBurbank,CAHereceivedhisBSdegreein1986inmicrobiologyfromSanDiegoStateUniversityandhisPhDdegreein1993inmicrobiologyfromWashingtonStateUniversity,wherehepursuedhisthesisresearchattheInstituteofBiologicalChemistryFrom1993to1997,hewasapost-doctoralresearchassociateintheDepartmentofPlantPathologyofCornellUniversity(CU)inIthaca,NYFrom1997to2000,hewasanassistantprofessorintheDepartmentofBiologicalSciencesattheUniversityofNevada-LasVegasIn2000,hemovedtotheUniversityofNebraska-Lincoln,whereheisnowaprofessorinthePlantScienceInitiativeandtheDepartmentofPlantPathologyAlfano’sresearchfocusesonthetypeIIIsecretionsystem(T3SS)ofPseudomonassyringaepvtomatoDC3000andtheeffectorproteinsinjectedviatheT3SSintoplantcellsbythismodelpathogenTheT3SSiscentraltothevirulenceofDC3000andmanyotherGram-negativeplantpathogens,andAlfanohasmademajorcontributionstoseveralaspectsofourcurrentunderstandingofthissystem,includingthegenomiccontextoftheT3SS,thecontrolofsubstratetraffic,theroleofchaperonesineffectordelivery,theabilityofvarioustypeIIIeffectorsintheDC3000repertoiretosuppressplantdefenses,andthebiochemicalactivityoftwoeffectors,HopAO1andHopU1
