AndrewBentwasborninSpringfield,OHHeobtainedaBAdegreeinbiology,magnumcumlaude,fromOberlinCollegein1983andaPhDdegreefromMITin1989Followingpost-doctoralworkattheUniversityofCalifornia-Berkeley,hejoinedthefacultyattheUniversityofIllinoisin1994and,in1999,transferredtotheUniversityofWisconsin-Madison,whereheiscurrentlyprofessorofplantpathologyHehasreceivedmultipleawardsandrecognitionforhisresearchandteaching,includingthePoundResearchAward(2002)forexcellenceinresearchattheUniversityofWisconsinBentisaneminentauthorityonthemolecularmechanismsunderlyingplantdiseaseresistance,includingpathogenrecognition,signalingeventsleadingtogeneactivation,andthehostdefensesinducedHisresearchprimarilyinvolvesArabidopsisasamodelplant,whoserapidlifecycleandfacilegeneticsfacilitatediscoveryofgeneralprinciplesapplicabletootherplants,suchassoybean,whichBentalsostudiesHismajorcontributionsfallessentiallyintofivemajorareasasfollows
