DrKaloshianreceivedherBScdegreeinAgriculture(1982)andMScinPlantProtection(1984)fromtheAmericanUniversityofBeirut,LebanonHerPhDresearchinPlantPathologyattheUniversityofCalifornia,Riverside,wasentitled,“GeneticsofresistancetoMeloidogynesppinwheat,”whichshecompletedin1989Followingreceiptofherdoctoraldegree,shepursuedresearchasaPostdoctoralFellowatUC-RiversideandUC-DavisIn1996,shewasappointedAssistantProfessorandAssistantNematologistintheDepartmentofNematologyatUC-Riverside,whereshecurrentlyholdsthepositionofAssociateProfessorDrKaloshianhasworkedonhostresistancetoplantparasiticnematodesformuchofhercareerHercurrentfocusisonnematoderesistanceintomatoThetomatogeneMiisthefirstclonedplantresistancegenewithdualspecificitytotwounrelatedorganisms,anematodeandanaphidHerresearchgroupiscurrentlypursuingtwoapproachestoidentifyplantgenesthatcontroldiseaseresistanceThefirstapproachistogeneticallydissecttheMi-mediatedresistancepathwaytobothnematodesandaphidsSheisusingmutationalanalysistoidentifyandcharacterizeplantgenesthatcontrolnematodeandaphidrecognitionandthesubsequentexpressionofresistanceThesecondapproachistoisolatenematoderesistancegeneswithnovelspecificitiesCurrentlyonlyonenematoderesistancegene,Mi,ispresentincultivatedtomatoThevalueofMihasbeencompromisedbytheappearanceatseverallocationsinCaliforniaandinotherpartsoftheworld,variantsofnematodestrainsandspeciesthatcaninfectMi-bearingtomatoMiisnoteffectiveattemperaturesabove28CShehasinitiatedaDNAmarkeranalysisasasteptowardsgeneticmappingandcloningofnewsourcesofresistancegenesinthewildtomatospecies,Solanumperuvianum
